Before the Bottle, There Was a Bigger Idea.

The story connecting Essentially Africa, WHE and Eco Regeneration — from familiar botanical rituals to new discoveries, with people and purpose behind the harvest.

The photographs above show our khakibos harvesting concept trial near Eersterust. The golden-to-deep-amber liquids pictured are essential oils.

The story connecting Essentially Africa, WHE and Eco Regeneration.

A botanical product often enters our lives in a small way. A mist after a shower. A scent we enjoy. A ritual we return to at the end of a long day.

Behind those moments, there can be a much bigger idea: a different way to see the plants around us, the work that gives them value and the possibilities they hold for people and the land.

That connection has been part of our thinking from the beginning. Now, through WHE, we are giving it a clearer voice.

We began with something familiar.

Rose geranium and other familiar botanicals offered a place to start. They gave us a way to introduce people to botanical distillates and essential oils through products they could experience for themselves.

We wanted people to ask questions. To understand the difference between a distillate and an essential oil. To discover a scent, a texture and a place for a botanical in their own routine.

Confidence takes time. Introducing an unfamiliar plant, a new use and an unfamiliar brand all at once asks a great deal of a customer. We chose to begin by building a relationship.

Before we could introduce new botanical possibilities, we needed to earn your trust.

Every question, personal experience and returning customer helps shape that relationship. WHE carries the journey forward.

Before the bottle, there was the harvest.

In 2021, we harvested khakibos near Eersterust to test a wild-harvesting concept. The photographs record that work: gathering plants, loading the harvest and the essential oils produced through distillation.

Khakibos, botanically known as Tagetes minuta, became part of a practical question: what useful possibilities might exist in plants people pass every day?

Answering that question takes work. It involves identifying and selecting material, harvesting, processing, understanding its character and exploring suitable uses. Behind a finished product are people, skills and decisions that deserve to be seen.

Rooted in Eco Regeneration.

Eco Regeneration is the wider vision behind WHE: connecting care for the land with useful products, practical skills and local economic opportunity.

Developed through SEOBI, this vision brings together responsible harvesting, botanical processing and pathways towards restoring and stabilising land. Its ambition reaches beyond collecting plants. It includes appropriate replacement planting, long-term care and opportunities for people to earn through meaningful work.

WHE connects the people and work behind this vision with products and markets. Essentially Africa introduces the WHE product range through botanical education, product experience and customer care.

These connections matter. A useful product needs someone who values it. Reliable demand can help create a reason to develop skills, improve processing and build a lasting business around the work.

As Eco Regeneration develops, we will share the activities and results we can document. Each harvest has its own context; the story of caring for a place continues well beyond the day plants are gathered.

A new discovery, for everyday movement.

One of the first WHE concepts now taking shape is a 150 ml Khakibos Foot & Shoe Mist, made around the botanical distillate.

The idea grew from an everyday experience: running shoes, training sessions, long days on our feet and the wish to feel fresh and comfortable. It gives us a focused use to explore and learn from.

The mist remains in development. We are assessing its suitability and performance, including its potential for freshness and odour management. We will share more as testing and development progress.
